Workshops Planned for Lexington County Residents

The Lexington Soil and Water Conservation District has planned two workshops that residents of Lexington County are invited to attend. The information regarding each workshop is listed below.

On Saturday, March 27th, 2010, the South Carolina Forestry Commission and the Lexington Soil and Water Conservation District invites Homeowners of Lexington County to a FireWise Workshop. The workshop will be a two-hour educational workshop at no charge to you. It will highlight simple things you can do around your home in regards to landscaping and building construction, to increase the chances of your home surviving a wildfire.

The FireWise Workshop will be held at the South Region Law Enforcement Center located at 102 Airport Road (off of Old Charleston Road) in Pelion, SC. The workshop will begin at 10 am and end at 12 noon. Lunch will be provided.

If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Alivia by Noon on Monday, March 22nd, 2010. It is important that you RSVP, so that we will have enough materials and food for everyone in attendance.

On Wednesday, April 21st, 2010, the Lexington Soil and Water Conservation District and the Lexington Clemson University Extension Service is hosting a Fish Pond Management Clinic for pond owners. Mr. Jack Whetstone will present the latest on managing your fish pond.

The Fish Pond Management Clinic will be held at the Lexington Clemson University Extension Office located at 605 West Main Street in Lexington, SC from 3 pm to 5 pm.

Conservation Teacher of the Year Nominations Being Accepted 

Do you incorporate environmental science into your lesson plans? Do you have an outdoor classroom? Do you use conservation based curricula? If you are a teacher and answered yes to any of these questions, you may have the qualities of a Conservation Teacher of the Year.

Each year the Lexington Soil and Water Conservation District accepts nominations from school teachers in the county, and honors deserving teachers at their annual awards banquet, which will be held on May 13th, 2010. There are two categories for teacher awards: Primary Teachers – K-6th grades, and Secondary Teachers – 7-12th grades. If you have incorporated conservation into your school program and would like a nomination form, click on the links below.

The deadline for nominations is close of business on Monday, April 5, 2010. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to be recognized in your community!

Scholarship Applications Available

The Lexington Soil and Water Conservation District will award two scholarships this year, one in the sum of a $1,000 and the other in the sum of $500. Both scholarships are available to eligible high school seniors residing in Lexington County, who will be attending a college or university. The scholarship recipient must be majoring in an agricultural or environmental related field such as: vocational agriculture education, agriculture engineering, agronomy, forestry, horticulture, natural resources, biology, etc.

These scholarships are made possible through the Lexington Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Commissioners, businesses, organizations, and individual citizens in the county. The deadline for the applications is close of business on Monday, April 5, 2010. Applications are available by clicking on the link below.

 2010 Youth Photography Contest 
 

Attention Youth! The 2010 Youth Photography Contest sponsored by the Lexington Soil and Water Conservation District is officially underway. The categories in which to enter your photos are: Trees and Plants, Native Wildlife, Landscapes, and Rural Life. There are two divisions in which you can enter - Division I and Division II. Division I is for students in grades 9-12 and Division II is for students in grades 6-8. The deadline for entries is the close of business day Monday, April 5, 2009.

All photos must be taken in South Carolina between January 1, 2009 and April 4, 2010. The photographer must reside in Lexington County. Students can enter a total of four (4) photographs in the contest, with a limit of two photos per category. Photos submitted must contain the following information: the photographer’s name, address, phone number, grade level, and school; category and title of photograph; subjects in photo, if any; and location of where photo was taken. Each photo submitted may be in black and white or color print and in the sizes of 4”x6” or 5”x7”.

Awards will be given to first place, second place, and honorable mention winners in each of the four categories in each Division. First place award winners will receive $50 each. Second place award winners will receive $25 each. Honorable Mention award winners will receive a magazine subscription to the SC Wildlife Magazine. All award winners will be recognized at the District’s Annual Awards Banquet that will be held on May 13, 2010 at T and S Farm in Leesville, SC.
