ARBOR DAY
in Lexington County
Trees are important! A committee, formed by the Lexington Soil and Water
Conservation District and the Lexington County Landscape Administrator, has been
working on the 2011 Arbor Day Activities for Lexington County schools. The
activities will culminate on December 2, 2011.
This program is intended to help educate our students about how and why trees
are important to us. This is a great age for them to learn how to properly take
care of the trees they have or will have when they plant new ones.
Six schools from Districts 1 (Pelion Elementary, Pleasant Hill Elementary, &
White Knoll Elementary), 2 (C.A. Taylor, & Pineview Elementary), and 5 (Irmo
Elementary) responded this year to take part in the Arbor Day activities. We
will be sending these teachers some resource information for them to use in
developing classroom activities to fit into their teaching curriculum. The
literature will provide many possibilities to select from for this event. We
will include items from the National Arbor Day Foundation and from Clemson
University.
We will develop a program for each school for the activities on Friday, December
2, 2011. Members of the Lexington Soil and Water Conservation District,
Lexington County Council Members or the Lexington County Landscape Administrator
will assist in these programs. We will make a presentation to a general assembly
of fourth graders. We will end with the planting of a Red Bud tree on the school
property. The trees are being donated to the schools by the Palmetto Pride
Organization, through a grant for the trees, arranged by the Soil and Water
Conservation District.
The Lexington County Council publicly recognized Arbor Day this year to be
December 2, 2011 in Lexington County with a Resolution given to the Lexington
Soil & Water Conservation District on October 25, 2011.
